Save For A Better Future!!

Energy conservation means to reduce the quantity of energy that is used for different purposes. This practice may result in increase of financial capital, environmental value, national and personal security, and human comfort.Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy may want to conserve energy in order to reduce energy costs and promote economic, political and environmental sustainability.

Industrial and commercial users may want to increase efficiency and thus maximize profit.Right in your own home, you have the power to save money and energy. Saving energy reduces our nation's overall demand for resources needed to make energy, and increasing your energy efficiency is like adding another clean energy source to our electric power grid.

if we act now. A few simple steps and we can avoid power cuts. But before we list out those steps, just ask yourself, “Am I willing to do my bit for the future of our great city?” I think we all know the answer.

These are the important steps by which you can make the change ,
Shift consumption away from the 10 am - 8 pm peak times:
Let's avoid adding to the power demand during this peak time. By simply using some of our common electrical appliances before and after this time band. Washing machines, geysers, irons, building water pumps – all can be shifted without much inconvenience.

Switch off your devices when not in use.
ACs at 24ยบ C
ACs are possibly the biggest cause of any summer power crisis. Every time one more AC is switched on and every time the temperature is lowered by one more degree, a huge load is added to the system. We can however work towards uninterrupted power – if we give up ‘freezing’ for ‘cool enough’. Let’s all go 24 this summer - it's actually quite comfortable.

Switch off from the plug point
Whenever we leave a plug point ‘ON’ after switching an electrical appliance ‘OFF’ with the remote, power is still being consumed in ‘stand-by mode’. And no small amount either – these little wastages account for an unbelievable 5% of the city’s power consumption. You will agree that's a sheer waste. So, after usage, let's switch off our ACs, TVs, washing machines, microwaves, geysers and mobile chargers from the plug point. Every single time.

It is up to each one of us to make the change - if you will, India will,

Make sure you switchoff your deivces too
Lighting
  • Switch off lights and fans when not required.
  • Replace bulbs with tube lights & CFL(Compact Flourescent Lamps).
  • Utilise natural light by using electronic chokes & regulators.
  • Optimise use of lights in malls, multiplexes & hotels.
  • Turn off the lights when not in use.
  • Take advantage of daylight by using light-coloured, loose-weave curtains on your windows to allow daylight to penetrate the room. Also, decorate with lighter colours that reflect daylight.
  • De-dust lighting fixtures to maintain illumination.
  • Use task lighting; instead of brightly lighting an entire room, focus the light where you need it.
  • Compact fluorescent bulbs are four times more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs and provide the same lighting.
  • Use electronic chokes in place of conventional copper chokes.

  • Electric iron

      • Select iron boxes with automatic temperature cutoff.
      • Use appropriate regulator position for ironing.
      • Do not put more water on clothes while ironing.
      • Do not iron wet clothes.
            Fans

            • Replace conventional regulators with electronic regulators for ceiling fans.
            • Install exhaust fans at a higher elevation than ceiling fans
            Refrigerator

            • Do not open door frequently.
            • Set thermostat in medium cooling position.
            • Keep adequate space from wall.
            • Do not overload the refrigerator.
            • Defrost your refrigerator regularly.
            • Regularly defrost manual-defrost refrigerators and freezers; frost buildup increases the amount of energy needed to keep the motor running.
            • Leave enough space between your refrigerator and the walls so that air can easily circulate around the refrigerator.
            • Don't keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold.
            • Make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight.
            • Cover liquids and wrap foods stored in the refrigerator. Uncovered foods release moisture and make the compressor work harder.
            • Do not open the doors of the refrigerators frequently.
            • Don't leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary, as cold air will escape.
            • Use smaller cabinets for storing frequently used items.
            • Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge.
            Washing Machine

            • Use after 10 PM or before 10 AM.
            • Run washing machine only with full load.
            • Use the shortest cycle time.
            • Always wash only with full loads.
            • Use optimal quantity of water.
            • Use timer facility to save energy.
            • Use the correct amount of detergent.
            • Use hot water only for very dirty clothes.
            • Always use cold water in the rinse cycle.
            • Prefer natural drying over electric dryers.

These Simple steps can make the big difference in your energy saving as well as a decrease in your electricity bills, so choose wisely and live well, We the Carion Bilta, saves energy at each step in our building by providing energy efficient devices and harnessing reneweble energy resourses.

Rain Water Harvesting- The Effective Utilisation of Natural Resourses.

We are having  the season of umbrellas and rain coats, season of the wet roads and filled up rivers in kerala. It is our duty to sustain the natural resourses for a better future. There are many ways by which we can preserve our valuable resourses, for example,Solar- panels,Rain water harvest, recyciling etc, here we are talking about harvesting the rains. Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse before it reaches the aquifer. Uses include water for garden, water for livestock, water for irrigation, and indoor heating for houses etc. In many places the water collected is just redirected to a deep pit with percolation. The harvested water can be used as drinking water as well as for storage and other purpose like irrigation.

            Save Each Drop
            Advantages
Rainwater harvesting provides an independent water supply during regional water restrictions and in developed countries is often used to supplement the main supply. It provides water when there is a drought, can help mitigate flooding of low-lying areas, and reduces demand on wells which may enable ground water levels to be sustained. It also helps in the availability of potable water as rainwater is substantially free of salinity and other salts.

            Demographic Significance For Kerala

There are good opportunities for Rainwater harvesting in Kerala because Kerala is located in a geographical area with two rainy seasons. Kerala faces severe water scarcity between February and mid May every year. During summer, there are drinking water shortages. During this period drinking water and other water purposes become unavailable. This is expected in the coming years. In spite of 44 rivers and world's largest water well density, per capita surface water and groundwater availability of the State is lower than that of arid States of India. Moreover, Kerala has one of the lowest per capita rainwater availability in the Indian sub-continent and it is still decreasing over the time, even though it receives 3000 mm of rainfall, which is around 3 times the Indian national average. The high variations in spatial and temporal rainfall add to the complexity of problems associated with water management faced by the State.

            Basic Layout
            Components

A Roof water harvesting system should have the following components:

Down pipe and first flush arrangement
This is an arrangement to prevent the dust and other unwanted materials that may be seen on the roof, from reaching the storage tank. By fitting a down pipe with an end cap or valve can ensure that the washed water from the roof does not reach the storage tank. It is always safe to ensure that the first flush arrangement remains open during non- rainy days and should be closed after first rain up to the satisfaction of the end user.

            Filter unit
The rainwater collected from the roof should be allowed to reach the storage tank only through a filtering mechanism. Rubble, sand and charcoal, as used in the traditional three-pot filtration, can be adopted here. 10 cm thick 20mm rubbles, 10 cm thick charcoal/coconut shell, 15 cm thick coarse sand, 5 cm thick 6mm rubbles etc. may be arranged from bottom to top in the filter unit. The water that is passed through this filter should remain safe for a long period of storage. Charcoal/coconut shell is added to eliminate gaseous pollutants.

            Storage tank
Mainly three types of storage tanks are constructed for roof water harvesting. They are aboveground, underground or sub surface tanks.

            Roof Type

Provision for drawing water and spill over
For drawing water from the storage tanks any method may be adopted provided it shall be drawn only when needed. The easier the method adopted for drawing water, the more will be the chances for its misuse. Three types of drawing water are usually adopted. They are by using a tap (small capacity tanks with basement and over ground tanks), hand pump (under ground tanks) or electric pump sets (large capacity tanks).

We Carion Bilta replenish and reserve all the natural resourses with state of the art building technologies, ensuring a greener and eco friendly world to live on.

Get your roof ready for the rains. Inspect your roof twice per year to avoid costly problems that can escalate into tremendous cost.Look for cracks along the ridge of your roof and where your shingles fold over to form the cap.Inspect the valleys of your roof (the area of your roof with a downward slope)

Make sure that the sheet metal flashing does not have any holes or rusty spots. Ensure that you do not have any missing, loose or curled shingles. Replace any in that condition that you find as soon as possible so as to avoid moisture leaks inside your home that can weaken your wall and/or ceilings.

Say It Up Loud With Drapes And Curtains
Take a look at your gutters to make sure that they drain well and don't cause water to back up. Also make sure that there are not a lot of little granules collecting in there. Granules in your gutter are a sign that your roof's coating needs to be resealed.Make sure that you don't have any down pipe clogs.

As per the designs from Carion Bilta ,Work from the inside out. Inside your home, check out your ceilings to make sure that you are not experiencing signs of roof or other leakage.
Be on the lookout for water rings, mold or wall or ceiling discoloration. Make any necessary repairs to fix the issue and prevent it from happening again during the upcoming rainy season.

Tackle your doors and your windows. Make sure that both close and seal properly, and make any repairs or improvements as necessary.Make sure that dead branches have been cleared from around your house. This will reduce the risk that they will fall during the storm and damage your home.

Think about having your basement inspected. If water is seeping in, you may have to have the whole thing resealed

So lets welcome the dews and drops to our homes with a smile on our face, keeping our precious house safe and secure, Carion Bilta .wishing you a very safe and enjoyable rainy season ahead.

            Lighting Up Your Living Atmosphere

Ambiance of a room or the place we live on has its own impact on the mood of the human mind. No one wants to work on a tiring work atmosphere. The interiors, the furniture, music, lighting ,everything has to be comfy to get a workable atmosphere. The importance of a well lit interior or a workspace tells a lot about the people and its potential. As one of the pioneer in interior design team in Kerala, Carion Bilta, contain the idea of creating the apt ambiance for your homes. Here we are focusing the limelight towards the interior lighting and the methods.
            Ingeneous Bed Rooms

When it comes about lighting ,there are two rules: You should have a mix of light sources at different levels to create a flattering ambiance, and you need appropriate task lighting for whatever you do in that space (reading, sauteing, getting dressed). The key areas in a home are Living Room,Dining Room, Kitchen,Bed room and the Bath room.

In the Living room, light three of the four corners, focusing one of those lights on an object (art, a plant, a striking chair). Use a combination of table lamps and floor lamps, some with a downward glow and some that shine upward. Allow for reading in as many seats as possible with down-glowing lamps on three-way switches. If you have an overhead fixture, put it on a dimmer.

Dining Room, To draw people in, make the table the brightest spot in the room. Use a chandelier or a pendant above the table, limiting the total wattage to 100. Elsewhere in the room, indirect lighting is best—it’s relaxing and flattering. Give the space a subtle glow with a pair of small table lamps on a sideboard or matching sconces on the wall above. Battery-powered votives inside a glass-front china cabinet can be a nice touch.
            Sleek Workspaces

In the kitchen , focus on overhead lighting (on a dimmer that you can crank up when cooking), and add lower sources to illuminate work surfaces. Use pendants, under-cabinet lights, or a sturdy table lamp (kept away from the sink).

For your bedroom, aim for a cozy, insular atmosphere: Place reading lamps or sconces by the bed—but not pointed directly at it. If you have recessed or track fixtures, angle them away from the bed, toward the dressing area. On a low table, include a small, intimate lamp with a tinted low-wattage bulb to mimic candlelight.
            Ubber Cool  Dining Halls

Bath room, the best choice for applying makeup is sidelights, such as a pair of sconces flanking the mirror. An overhead light helps fill in any shadows on your face and also fully illuminates the room (important when cleaning). In a large space, you might also want a light directly over the shower.

The lighting in a home changes the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of a room. Placement and type are important aspects of interior design, and they work in conjunction with color selections, room size, availability of natural light and furniture selection. The elements that come together when the right lighting is achieved transform a room into a seamless combination of functionality and style.

            Summer Tips For Interior Design

We are in the midst of a fired up summer at Cochin, Kerala, During this time not only is the mercury rising but so is your electricity bills.

The most basic thing you can do to as a Keralite, is to keep your house cooler without air conditioning is to keep as much sunlight out as possible and let cooler air in at night. During the day, keep windows, drapes, blinds, or shades closed, especially on the southern and western sides of your home. If you have a porch, you can put up large plastic or bamboo shades to cut down on sunlight. Here are some tips to keep your infrastructure cooler during summer:

            - Give your air-conditioner a rest for some hours during the day. And while you do this, open all the windows in your home. Let the occasional breeze grace your home, instead of keeping your home completely closed all day.

            - Ensure that you have light-coloured curtains, drapes, blinds at home. Light-coloured fabrics reflect away the harsh sunlight and heat unlike dark-coloured ones which absorb heat.

Ventilation and apt drapes adds the bliss
-Moving air is cooler air. At night, place fans in windows to bring more cool air in. Ceiling fans can also make a big difference. In terms of cooling, even a one-mile-per-hour breeze will make you feel three to four degrees cooler Ceiling fans have two settings, one to pull air up (for winter use), and the other to push air down. Make sure your ceiling fan is blowing down.

            - Keep potted plants in your house. Not only will they disperse oxygen in the atmosphere during the day, giving you clean air but they also make a pretty sight with their greenery, making Kerala greener.

            Greener, ecofriendly living enviornment

            - Replace your ordinary lights and bulbs with fluorescent ones. They cost more than the average lights and bulbs. However, they provide a lighting effect that is much cooler and consumes less electricity, and provides a pleasant workable environment, feel free to try out LED lightings which is cochin’s new trend in interior lighting.
-Keeping your electronics on a power strip provides a quick way to "power-down" before leaving for the day.

            - As Keralites,we do cook daily, Ideally, one should avoid cooking during the hottest part of the day, i.e. afternoons. But if you have to, use a fan to direct the heat out of the house via windows.

            - It's a good idea to paint the ceiling or the roof of your house white in colour, as the colour helps in keeping the home cooler.

Classy white cieling adds the right ambience.

Designing your home and office to be more energy friendly as well as Eco-friendly by making use of simple ideas like mentioned, can make a big difference in both the living environment as well as energy bills.

The colonial glamour of Fort Kochi

A major part of Fort Kochi still reflects the opulent lifestyle of the colonial era. The architectural splendor of classic colonial style buildings take you through historic memories of European style architecture.

The haunting hints of its colonial past bring alive the bygone glory of a historical era in architecture. Crimpson-shaded wooden roofs made of flat face rafters, the buildings, the doorways, the streets; almost everything in Fort Kochi narrates the tale of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British.

            Mosaic of cultures
Fort Kochi is home to a lot of cultures. Even though most of the buildings have undergone stages of renovation, a healthy part of it still stays true to the roots of European Architecture.

            David Hall

David Hall was built around 1695 by the Dutch East India Company.  The roof structured in the form of an upturned hill is a real architectural wonder. The wooden roof droops slightly because of the horizontal beam and trusses are put to support them. The three-foot wide walls and four-column windows gracefully add to the elegance of the well-manicured garden and old trees around.
            David Hall

            Koder House

Koder House is a magnificent three-storied structure built by the Portuguese in the 1800s. Rebuilt and renovated, Koder House is today, one of the most imposing heritage hotels in Fort Kochi. The renovation was made with definite plans adhering to the finest style of Indo-European architecture.
Opulent wooden floors, carved furniture and high glass paned windows are some of the unique features of the mansion. Huge open spaces embellished by wide teak staircases add to the splendor of the building.
            Koder House

            Percie Leslie Bungalow

Built in 1862, the Percie Leslie Bungalow is a fine blend of Portuguese, Dutch and local influences. Wooden ceilings, arched doorways and carved doors are authentic inspirations of European architecture. Waterfront verandhas is the other prominent feature of this building.
            Percie Leslie Bungalow
            A museum of local history
Fort Kochi’s story is like a melting pot of European flavours. You’ll never get tired of exploring. A walk through the narrow lanes takes you on a high of architectural grandeur. Though most of the heritage homes and buildings have found new life as boutique resorts and hotels, you are never denied the chance to have a look back at former glories. Fitting many facets of an olden day colonial architecture, Fort Kochi stands tall as a museum of local history, a place where stories live through buildings.

When powerful colonial influences coupled with the regional perceptions, the architecture did flourish. Not only do we find revived mansions of classic European architecture, but we also see the gladdening urge for a colonial inspiration in modern homes. The modernist approach of colonial revival is catching up interest and more people are seeking a colonial feature in their homes. Carion Bilta, the leading architecture and interior designing company in Kerala can help you find the holistic experience of revived colonial expression in your homes.
